Pinch

A graphic gastronomy comic zine. By Audrey Anderson

My invitation to comics began with my name, ‘Audrey.’ At six years old, my first comics were a few Little Audrey, Harvey comics. My dad had to go out one night to quickly buy some bread for lunch at work the next day. I tagged along and waited in the car. He came out of the cafe with the bread and dropped three ‘Audrey’ comics on my lap and said, ‘there you go... see It's your name.’

At 16 my aunt Janet bought me my first alternative storytelling comic (Kabuki, By David Mack). Thereafter I studied a fine art degree, finishing my final honours year with a focus on comic phenomena of simple drawing becoming an interpersonal experience. I then began a career as a contemporary artist using comics as a compass and anchor. Exhibiting all around the world.

In 2018, I was awarded a residency opportunity to work on my comic ideas in Finland. I spent a wonderful month with like minded comic artists from many different countries. This is where my idea to write a ‘graphic gastronomy zine became a reality. I call it “Pinch” because it is not only a culinary term but also described how I felt about making comics. It is a pinch of indulgence, for me, to travel and document interesting places and people recording flagship receipts. I then use drawing techniques  to relay the interesting story and explain how to make something yum. I started with myself as my first documented character living in Johannesburg, South Africa. Telling my story of how to make pizza or cookies within a particular space and time. In my first comic zines the ingredients and cutlery are your gastronomy instructors and I am the context narrator.
